Straight out from the east coat - loved this show. Girl in front said "nothing but space" when it was over - she was right!

Love your stories guys. Had a good laugh. This is a good show recorded very well by Jim Wise. I consider this an FOB, hand-held (with the close-in whooping), and probably 2/3 back if not in the "sweet spot" with the clarity and the fidelity being top notch. Don't recall a PITB Reprise being Reprised unless my memory says they did it in Cleveland on 3.2.81. This is a solidly played average show (which of course is very good) but the stellar recording ups the stars to four. My only beef is the outro crowd being cut too quickly, loosing that much loved ambience of being there.

Was in Boulder for the 25th Anniversary of Kerouac's "On The Road". Took Allen Ginsberg to a Radio interview in Boulder - Got to Drive Allen in my Rental Car!! Twenty years old and my first Greateful Dead concert. I was just getting hip to the beat stuff in college and was still listening to mostly Phoebe Snow and James Taylor - thought The Dead were heavy metal. What a beautiful surprise to find real American music - folky - trippy, beautiful. It started to rain and I found shelter under a rock. I kid my age came up to me and handed me a new unwrapped rain poncho, and I said "no, I'm ok". He kept pushing it on me and smiling and I kept telling him No! - finally insisting I didn't want to buy the poncho - that it was warm and I was fine. Ahh - he wasn't selling it to me, he was giving it to me - just giving it to me, and asked if I was going to Austin. I wondered out loud to him why he would ask if I was going to Austin - what kind of weird non-sequitor was this? "The next show" he said - I was very green to the scene - just a New York boy who didn't expect anything for free and who didn't understood that people follow bands around. Well, I got it that night, and while I never followed the band I saw another dozen or so shows before Jerry died and have loved the music ever since. The next day I pulled a drunken Timothy Leary out of traffic up in Boulder and sat him safely on a bench on Boulder's outdoor mall - he said "thank you young man". What a week.

All 3 of these shows were great. I think the 29th is the best of the 3 myself. On this night Phil's side of the stage was literally underwater with Phil standing in a puddle for most of the evening. Didn't slow him down a bit with some great big bass notes you could probably hear all the way in Denver! Check the beginning of Playin (including the tuning part) and toward the end of the Other One where he just kinda starts playing big fat bass chords, just great. Security at the Rocks was always oppressive, they even had a little holding cell that they would keep you in if you were vending or consuming in the parking lot, just until the show was over, then they would let you go. I had to get into one of these shows "In Cognito" as I narrowly escaped capture by one of their THUGS for selling a few shirts on my way in. They had a search party out for me and I hid in my buddy's van, changed my clothes, wrapped my big head of hair in a scarf, put some sunglasses on and in I went.
